Paleomagnetism: Strong evidence of Seafloor Spreading and Plate Tectonics. Paleomagnetism led the revival of the continental drift hypothesis and its transformation into theories of Sea Floor Spreading and Plate Tectonics.; The regions that hold the unique record of earth’s magnetic field lie along the mid-ocean ridges where the sea floor is spreading. Paleomagnetic results from 83 surface paleomagnetic sites, within and near the INL, are used to correlate these buried lava flow groups to basaltic shield volcanoes still exposed on the surface of the eastern Snake River Plain. Sample handling and demagnetization protocols are described as well as the paleomagnetic data averaging process.
